Washington, D.C. gears up for WorldPride 2025

With Pride Month behind us and as you recover from all the parties, still finding glitter in random places around your house, do not fret – WorldPride 2025 is just around the corner. Washington, D.C. is set to host this global celebration, marking the 50th anniversary of Pride in the nation’s capital. Organized by the Capital Pride Alliance and InterPride, the event is expected to attract over two million visitors, alongside local participants. Known for its historic marches and advocacy, D.C. will spotlight critical LGBTQ+ issues and human rights.

D.C. proudly promotes and validates diversity, equity, and inclusion, where all people are welcome in every city neighborhood. The city has the largest percentage of residents who identify as LGBTQ+ in the United States, with 14.3 percent of its population according to a 2023 analysis by the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law. Washington, D.C. is the center of many historic milestones for the LGBTQ+ community and is home to 36 national and international LGBTQ+ organizations.

The 2025 celebration begins with an opening ceremony on May 30, which is expected to draw over 10,000 attendees. Held at one of Washington, D.C.’s premier venues (exact location to be announced), this event will also launch the inaugural Capital Cup, a WorldPride Sports Festival featuring 20+ sports and over 8,000 athletes. Attendees of the opening ceremony will enjoy opening remarks, a flag-raising by dignitaries including the Mayor of D.C., food and drinks, an interactive light show, and a live concert, marking an exciting start to WorldPride.

Festivities will continue with neighborhood block parties, a Pride Parade featuring 500 contingents, a Pride Festival showcasing over 600 exhibitors, and a closing ceremony and concert anticipated to attract crowds of over 100,000.
A Human Rights Conference from June 4-6 will bring together 2,000-3,000 participants to discuss pivotal LGBTQ+ issues. The event will conclude with a rally and march on June 8, supporting initiatives from various Pride partners, including AAPI Pride, DC Black Pride, DC Latinx Pride, Silver Pride, Trans Pride, and Youth Pride.

Art and culture aficionados will find their highlights with the Smithsonian Passport program, which offers exclusive access to some of the nation’s most renowned museums and cultural institutions. This initiative provides unique opportunities to explore art, history, and culture through special exhibits and interactive experiences. Additionally, the Paint the Town with Pride initiative, running from May 28 to June 30, 2025, will transform D.C. into a vibrant canvas of creativity, featuring art installations, murals, and exhibitions celebrating LGBTQ+ pride.
