San Francisco's resident queer dance company, Sean Dorsey Dance has announced that its 17th season will be virtual and available free to registered guests in their own homes. The performances offer an exclusive first look at The Lost Art of Dreaming, the latest multi-year project conceived and directed by the nationally acclaimed transgender choreographer Sean Dorsey, whose previous award-winning projects include Boys in Trouble and The Missing Generation.
The Lost Art of Dreaming envisions trans and queer futures, disrupting long-entrenched American constructs that deny LGBTQ+ and BIPOC people the space to imagine — let alone create — our own futures. The project includes online dance “video postcards,” a headline performance at the 20th anniversary Fresh Meat Festival, and interactive community projects (Dorsey is known for bringing the broader community into his projects via interviews and movement classes). The project will culminate in a new full-length work featuring what Dorsey describes as “full-throttle contemporary dance, grand-scale costuming, highly-physical theater, and exquisite queer partnering.”

The Lost Art of Dreaming will first be shared with the public this week (April 16-18, 2021) with the At-Home virtual performance, which will feature nine short film dance “postcards” performed by the award-winning company and shot entirely outdoors and on location in the San Francisco Bay Area, to be streamed on YouTube Live. All tickets are free of charge (although donations are welcome), and advance online registration is required to reserve a virtual ticket and receive a screening link.

During this year's 20th annual Fresh Meat Festival — San Francisco’s celebration of transgender, queer, and gender-nonconforming arts and culture (streaming online June 17-19, 2021) — Sean Dorsey Dance will share another portion of The Lost Art of Dreaming.
This August, the company will unveil “Postcards from the Future,” a commissioned postcard series representing original artwork by transgender and gender-nonconforming Black, Indigenous, and people of color artists. Through the Sean Dorsey Dance website, the public can sign-up to select one of the full-color piece of art and request that a message to their “future” self (or another recipient) be handwritten by the Sean Dorsey Dance team on the postcard, which will then be mailed to an address in the U.S.

The full-length dance, The Lost Art of Dreaming, will have its world premiere in San Francisco next spring (April 2022), before the troupe launches a two-year, 10-plus city tour across the country. Visit seandorseydance.com for upcoming tour dates and city announcements.
