The best of Edinburgh’s traditional kiltmakers is Gordon Nicolson (NicolsonKiltmakers.com), who will find your clan tartan — or design you a new one, and outfit you with a sporran (the Scottish fanny pack), ghillie brogues (shoes), and all the proper gear. The Nicolson’s seamstresses have strong opinions — and some strong language — regarding proper kilt etiquette, so make use of their expertise.
They’re definitely fans of darker socks, but loathe kilts with pockets — like the short, sexy thighwear (made by 21st Century Kilts, 21stCenturyKilts.com) donned by the men on staff at the G&V Hotel (QuorvusCollection.com; pictured above). But you won’t hear any complaints from us.
