The lights of Broadway have been luring theater lovers to New York City for over a century, with the Theater District at its heart – a dazzling, high-energy stretch where world-class productions take center stage. While the roots of Broadway trace back to the 18th century, the modern Broadway era took shape in the early 1900s, with grand playhouses opening along 42nd Street and beyond. Today, New York City typically hosts around 40 Broadway productions at any given time, with off-Broadway and off-off-Broadway theaters adding hundreds more performances across the city.
Broadway remains one of the biggest draws for visitors to NYC, playing a vital role in the city’s staggering tourism numbers. In 2024 alone, millions of theatergoers helped push visitor counts past 66 million, and projections for 2025 expect a record of 68 million. But Broadway is more than a destination – it’s a way of life. The district has long been a magnet for actors, singers, dancers, and behind-the-scenes creatives who move to the city with dreams of seeing their names in lights. It’s also been a home and haven for the LGBTQ+ community, with Broadway providing a stage – both literally and figuratively – for queer voices to be heard. From the drag-infused glamour of La Cage aux Folles to The Boys in the Band, one of the first mainstream plays to center gay men’s lives, Broadway has reflected and shaped LGBTQ+ culture for decades.
If you’re planning a Broadway-bound trip, choosing the right place to stay can make all the difference. We’ve rounded up the best hotels in the Theater District, whether you’re looking for a themed suite to keep the magic going after the curtain falls, a prime location just an elevator ride from the action, a budget-friendly stay that doesn’t skimp on comfort, or an ultra-luxurious retreat to recharge in between shows. Plus, we’ve got recommendations for where to eat, drink, play, and explore when you're not busy catching the latest production.
Step into the magic of Disney in these themed suites at Hilton New York Times Square

For Broadway fans looking to extend the magic beyond the final curtain call, Hilton New York Times Square offers an immersive stay with two show-stopping Disney-themed suites – The Lion King’s Royal Suite and Aladdin’s Times Square Palace Suite. Thoughtfully designed in partnership with Disney Theatrical Group, these suites bring the spectacle of the stage into a luxuriously playful hotel experience.
From the moment you step into The Lion King’s Royal Suite, you’re transported to the Pride Lands, with hand-painted Rafiki patterns, woven basket art, and authentic stage-used fabrics decorating the space. Guests can indulge in a Simba S’mores dessert amenity, receive a wake-up call from Rafiki (Broadway’s own Tshidi Manye), and take home a thematic sleep mask, an autographed costume rendering from a Lion King performer, and exclusive show merchandise. The package also includes a daily breakfast buffet for two, parking, and access to an exclusive rate for premium seats at the Minskoff Theatre, where the musical plays eight times per week.
The Aladdin’s Times Square Palace Suite is just as dazzling, channeling the wonder of Agrabah with Moroccan rugs, gold-accented décor, and a “Cave of Wonders” bathroom. Guests can enjoy a Genie-tinicocktail or Magic Mocktail (one per magical guest) and a lively wake-up call from the Broadway musical’s Genie himself, Michael James Scott. This package also includes Aladdin-themed coloring materials for kids, complimentary breakfast, parking, access to special rates for premium seating at Aladdin the Musical, and exclusive show merchandise.
Interior designer Devin Sparkles, who curated both suites, tells Out Traveler exclusively, “The magic is right there, living on the walls. Sitting there, you can't help but feel like you are a part of the show.” They add, “I say come to New York, see your favorite Disney Broadway musical, but don't let the fun end when the curtain goes down.”
Beyond the suites, Hilton New York Times Square features 478 guestrooms just steps from the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, and some of Broadway’s biggest shows. The redesigned lobby includes Long Acre Market, celebrating all things New York with locally sourced food, drinks, and retail, while 42nd And Sky, a Gatsby-esque cocktail bar on the 15th floor, offers stunning Times Square views. Here, guests can sip a Hakuna Manhattan or Magic Mocktail while admiring the city lights.

The Broadway Lounge on the 8th floor is another fantastic spot to soak in the atmosphere, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Times Square and a menu inspired by bold New York flavors. And if you time your stay just right, you could ring in the New Year’s Eve ball drop from the comfort of your room, as many rooms offer direct views of the countdown. The Marriott Marquis also offers spacious connecting rooms, making it an excellent option for families or groups who want to stay together while enjoying easy access to NYC’s biggest attractions. Plus, mini-fridges, coffee makers, and hair dryers in every room add to the convenience.
For a personal touch, guests can light up Times Square with a custom message on the hotel’s football field-length LED billboard, which stretches across the Broadway façade – making it a perfect way to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, or proposals. And for those looking to elevate their stay, upgrades like M Club access and Urban Cabanas offer exclusive lounge perks and unique meeting spaces for Marriott Bonvoy members.

Dreamed up by award-winning architect David Rockwell, the hotel’s interiors exude a theatrical flair, feeling like an extension of Broadway itself – rooms are inspired by backstage dressing rooms, featuring rich jewel tones, velvet headboards, retro-style bathroom fixtures, and theatrical photographs lining the hallways.
Despite being a more affordable boutique hotel, Civilian doesn’t compromise on essentials, including comfort, cleanliness, and thoughtful design. Rooms are well-appointed with hardwood floors, full-length mirrors, and tea and coffee-making facilities. The Go Light option is excellent for those who prefer a streamlined stay, with housekeeping every third day, while the Full package offers added perks like daily housekeeping, welcome treats, and access to TMPL Health Club's saltwater pool and sauna, located just one block away.

Swingers, the Crazy Golf Club in Nomad is the ultimate wildcard
Courtesy Swingers, the Crazy Golf Club
Staying in the Theater District puts you within arm’s reach of just about any kind of bar experience you can imagine – this is NYC, after all. If you’re looking for a chic club, Balcon Salon is a must. For more LGBTQ+ energy, Flaming Saddles is the go-to for line-dancing cowboys, while Hardware Bar serves up strong drinks with a side of drag performances. But if skyline views are what you’re after, be sure to grab a drink at Starchild Rooftop, where you can sip on a perfectly made martini while soaking in city views.
For something truly out of the ordinary, Swingers Nomad is the ultimate wildcard. This adults-only indoor mini-golf course brings a mix of strategy, competition, and cocktails together for a uniquely fun night out.
Start with food and drinks – order the guacamole to share, trust me – before teeing off at your scheduled time. If you’ve booked a package with a reserved table, you can settle in and enjoy your meal before hitting the course. Their menu is packed with elevated NYC street food favorites, from pizza and burgers to mozzarella sticks and tacos, making it the perfect one-stop spot for a playful night out. And don’t skip the tasty cocktails – they’re just as much a part of the experience. In fact, you can take your drink along as you navigate the nine-hole course, and if you need a refill, a caddie will take your order halfway through the game. While it’s all in good fun, a hole-in-one on the very last hole comes with a prize – though I wouldn’t know what it is since I missed my shot. The attention to detail extends beyond the menu and course itself, with thoughtful touches like cruelty-free Malin + Goetz soap in the bathrooms.

Whether you’re looking to unwind in the thermal pools and saunas or indulge in a treatment, this oasis in the heart of the city offers a true reset. With its sleek, minimalist vibe, you can expect a refined yet relaxed atmosphere with provided towels and slippers – just bring your bathing suit and a water bottle, which you can refill at the stations. Booking a Day Pass (from $40) grants you access to all the amenities, which include six thermal pools ranging from icy plunges (45°F and 50°F) to deeply soothing hot baths (104°F). There’s also a saltwater pool, an intensely hot banya, dry and infrared saunas, and a steam room perfect for melting away stress and tension.
For the ultimate couples’ experience, the Full-Body Massage ($390 on weekdays, $420 on weekends) is a must. Designed for two guests in the same room, this 50-minute treatment incorporates deep tissue work, myofascial release, and acupressure techniques. Unlike a standard relaxation massage, Bathhouse’s approach is inspired by professional sports recovery, targeting often-overlooked areas like the legs and glutes to relieve tension, reset the nervous system, and leave you feeling fully recharged. All treatments at Bathhouse come with full access to the amenities before and after, letting you turn your visit into a full-day retreat.
Skylift at Rockefeller Center Offers a Dazzling 360° View of NYCCourtesy THG Creative

There’s no shortage of tours in NYC, but one that truly rises above the rest – literally – is the Rock Pass Tour at Rockefeller Center. This two-hour experience blends history, architecture, and adrenaline-pumping thrills with some of the most spectacular views of Manhattan.
The guided tour begins in the VIP lounge at Rockefeller Plaza, where you’ll get an insider’s look at the artistry and design behind one of the city’s most iconic skyscrapers. From there, you’ll stroll through the beautifully landscaped Channel Gardens and view St. Patrick’s Cathedral from a rare vantage point before skipping the lines and ascending straight to the Top of the Rock. Once you reach the 70th floor, the adventure really begins. First up is Skylift, a groundbreaking new attraction that elevates visitors an additional 30 feet above the observation deck on a revolving, open-air platform – suspended 900 feet above the city streets. The platform gently turns, offering a breathtaking 360-degree view of the city’s skyline. If you’re looking for a jaw-dropping place to pop the question, this is it (hint hint!). Next, you’ll step into history with The Beam Experience, a heart-racing chance to recreate the legendary 1932 photo Lunch Atop a Skyscraper. Just like the immigrants who helped build the building, you'll sit on a steel beam on the 69th floor, lifted 12 feet into the air, and rotated 180 degrees, offering a front-row seat to Central Park and the skyline beyond. As if all that weren’t enough, the tour wraps up with a champagne toast at the Weather Room, giving you one last chance to soak in the sweeping views before breezing past the velvet ropes one last time to the gift shop – where you’ll receive 20 percent off as a parting treat.
Death Becomes Her (L)and & Juliet (R) light up the stage 8 times a week
Courtesy Matthew Murphy and Evan Zimmerman
Broadway’s latest lineup is packed with must-see productions, but these two productions are worth adding to your itinerary.
The cult-favorite 1992 film gets a Broadway makeover in Death Becomes Her, a darkly hilarious tale of vanity, vengeance, and immortality. Madeline Ashton (Megan Hilty) and Helen Sharp (Jennifer Simard) become eternal frenemies after drinking a mysterious youth potion from the enigmatic Viola Van Horn (Michelle Williams). Their battle for beauty and revenge unfolds at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, complete with jaw-dropping stage magic that brings the movie's most iconic moments to life. Expect camp, chaos, and plenty of men in revealing outfits—one song is even titled “For The Gaze,” so you know it’s going to be a visual feast. With Christopher Sieber rounding out the cast, the show delivers a Broadway spectacle with a wickedly fun twist.
If you love catchy music and a fresh spin on a classic story, & Juliet is your show. Think Shakespeare, but make it pop. Created by Schitt’s Creek writer David West Read, this jukebox musical asks: What if Juliet didn’t die at the end of Romeo and Juliet? Instead, she takes control of her own destiny – soundtracked by a playlist of Max Martin’s biggest hits. With songs from Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, Katy Perry, and more, every number is a nostalgic crowd-pleaser. The show also brings modern representation to the stage with May, a non-binary character whose story arc seamlessly weaves in “I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman.”

To navigate Times Square, walk like you drive – no sudden stops
Courtesy Jen Davis/NYC Tourism + Conventions
It would be a disservice to my fellow New Yorkers not to include this, and while it might seem obvious to some, it’s surprisingly unknown to many – myself included before I moved here. These are the rules I wish someone had told me the minute I hopped off the plane at JFK.
Stopping in the middle of a busy NYC sidewalk is like slamming the brakes on the Autobahn – someone will crash into you, and they won’t be happy about it. If you need to pause and take in the dazzling chaos of Times Square – and you probably will because it is breathtaking – pull over to the side as you would if you were driving. And escalator etiquette? Stand on the right, walk on the left. Block the left side with your suitcase, and you’ll get an unsolicited masterclass in New York protocol. But don’t take it personally – their bark is often worse than their bite. Consider it a complimentary Sidewalk Monologue, starring an impatient New Yorker.
