At Long Last, You Can Get a Swallow of Portuguese Diversity at Home

At Long Last, You Can Take a Swallow of Diversity for Portugal from Home

VisitPortugal is showcasing the diversity, inclusiveness, and LGBTQ-affirming nature of the Iberian Peninsula nation.

Finally, it’s possible to show off your very own rainbow-colored swallow of diversity to your friends and family at home, the office, or just about anywhere.

VisitPortugal has teamed with the famed Faience Factory of Bordallo Pinheiro to create the ceramic art piece “Swallow of Diversity” to promote the inclusive diversity of Portugal for travelers and collectors of fine art worldwide. The new work is inspired by the original swallow art created by famed artist Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro and first patented in 1896. The bird is now an iconic symbol in Portugal immortalized in everything from fine art to coffee cups.

“By creating this 'Swallow of Diversity' with VisitPortugal, we will, together, tell the world that our country, in addition to being one of the best tourist destinations internationally, is an inclusive country that welcomes everyone equally, without regard to skin color, religion, country and culture of origin, gender or sexual orientation,” Nuno Barra, board member of Bordallo Pinheiro, said in a statement.

Luis Araújo, president of VisitPortugal, said the “Swallow of Diversity” shows Portugal is an inclusive and affirming travel destination for LGBTQ+ travelers, and a connection to the country’s artistic and cultural past.

“Portugal and the Portuguese continue to have all the attributes and competences that took us to the top, so the ambition remains: to lead the tourism of the future, regenerating our destination through a strong purpose of welcoming everyone and respecting all differences,” Araújo said in a statement.

Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro was a famed 19th century ceramics artist in Portugal. He designed bold and delicate ceramic pieces that were influenced by the Renaissance, Naturalism, Art Nouveau, and the Spanish and Arab legacies in the region. The original black-winged swallow has been a familiar sight in Portuguese houses, symbolizing the home as a nest with harmony, happiness, and prosperity, as well as love, loyalty, and fidelity. The swallow is also a migratory bird in nature, known as the “bird of departure and return,” making it the perfect symbol for travelers to Portugal who long for a return visit once they go home.

Each “Swallow of Diversity” comes in its own box with a special seal that centers the communication, openness, and affection inherent in Portuguese society and culture. They are available for sale for 29 euros at www.bordallopinheiro.com. You can learn more about travel to Portugal at Visitportugal.com.
