Hockney's 21st-century Works Get Royal Treatment at S.F.'s de Young Museum

"David Hockney: A Bigger Exhibition" kicks off on Saturday at San Francisco's de Young museum, featuring recent works from the prolific British artist, known for his love of California.

The show is the first comprehensive look at Hockney's work since 2002 and it includes not only oil paintings, but digital movies, Photoshop portraits, and drawings sketched on iPads. The pieces cover individuals and landscapes, with places as disparate as Norway and the Golden State. The work "Bigger Yosemite" includes five sketches of American majesty that Hockney created on his iPad. Another highlight is a digital movie filmed with 18 cameras that provide a dozen and a half perspectives on one subject. The de Young goes so far to say their exhibition "reveals the artist at the peak of his creative powers."
