One of Palm Springs's most beloved institutions — the senior, as in citizen, musical extravaganza known as the Palm Springs Follies — will take its final bow next year.
Running for 23 years at the historic Plaza Theatre movie house, the production is in the midst of its final season. The Follies is an old-fashioned variety show with performers and showgirls all over the age of 50, and typically co-starring a big star from the 1950s or '60s. There are no walkers or canes, but elaborate dance routines or over-the-top costumes; in other words, it's very Palm Springs and very gay.
The much-loved Follies were the brain-child of Riff Markowitz and Mary Jardin, who turned the show into a success after the show struggled early on (former mayor Sonny Bono presided over the premiere). Eventually, buses from all over the West were headed to Palm Springs to catch the singular act. Markowitz and Jardin are now ready to hang their hat and enjoy the good life in Palm Springs, hence the end of the Follies.
The final season, called "The Last Hurrah!", features the best dance numbers from past years, three big headliners, and three variety acts. Guest stars include Susan Anton, Maureen McGovern, and Darlene Love, and variety acts booked are Brad Cummings and Rex, Rejean St. Jules, and Frank Oliver. The Palm Springs Follies' final show is May 18, 2014.
