The plane had taken off moments earlier when it encountered engine problems.

As shocked beachgoers looked on, a small airplane carrying two people crashed on a Santa Monica beach in California this afternoon – and the entire episode was captured on video.

The plane had reportedly experienced engine trouble moments after takeoff from nearby Santa Monica Airport and attempted to make an emergency landing on the beach. The plane flipped over and landed on its back after it crashed into the surf just around 3:15 p.m. near Donald Douglas Loop.

Two people were reportedly extricated from the by lifeguards, but their conditions and injuries were not immediately available.
