One of the most famous gay bars in the world — West Hollywood's Abbey Food & Bar — announced on Monday that politicians who support antigay or anti-transgender legislation will not walk through their doors.
Any legislator who votes for discriminatory bills, in any state, will be added to the Abbey's "Deny Entry List." Management will also have headshots of such politicians on the security list. Abbey owner David Cooley cites anti-LGBT bills in Arizona, Kansas, Idaho, Ohio, and several other states as the impetus for the policy.
“When we banned bachelorette parties, we got calls from every red state with people saying they would never come to The Abbey," Cooley said in a statement. "We got calls from blue states complaining about fighting discrimination with more discrimination. I’ve learned that I can’t stop crazy, ignorant, or stupid but I can stop it from coming through my doors. I live in the ‘Real America’ too and more importantly, I live in the real world. I want to send a message to all those people out there who conflate Christian values with discrimination: we don’t want your kind here.”
