Last Sunday the Brooklyn Academy of Music hosted the first-ever Chop It Up!, The Ultimate Food Fight contest, the finale of one of NYC's latest restaurant weeks, called New York City Gets Fresh.
The contest, basically an excuse to get together and eat food specially prepared by some of New York's best restaurants using only locally sourced ingrediants. It was also an excuse, apparently, to host some of the nationa's top slam poets (really) and pair them up with the chefs to perform (hence the "food fight").
The winners of the contest should have one a "best name" contest as well: Mahogany Browne, Slam Mistress of the legendary Nuyorican Poets Café, and Ty-Lör Boring, the openly gay Top Chef contestant from earlier this year who hardly lives up to his name as he apparently LOVES to be naked. His various NSFW photos have appeared in Butt and Headmaster magazines, among others.
Other chef competitors involved included Wholesome Wave owner Michel Nischan, Evan Hanczor of the ever-popular Egg, in Williamsburg, and Joe "JJ" Johnson of Rocco's Dinner Party. The the other slam poets included the Tony Award-winning Stephen Colman (Def Poetry on Broadway), Kelly Zen-Yie Tsai (HBO Def Poetry), Vanessa Hidary.
