Fire Island Pines is unveiling a new public space honoring LGBTQ+ trailblazers of the past and present this weekend, and you’re invited!
Trailblazers Park will feature a water fountain with a tile mosaic by TM Davy which honors Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera. Above the fountain will hang 16 flags honoring other LGBTQ+ trailblazers like Larry Kramer and James Baldwin as well as some lesser known figures like Zuni Native American leader We’Ha, and the proud Puerto Rican butch lesbian Carmen Vazquez. Contributing artists include Wolfgang Tillmans, Nicole Eisenman, Raul de Nieves, Lyle Ashton Harris, Martine Gutierrez and others.
The ribbon cutting will start at noon Saturday, July 16, and feature speeches by members of the Brookhaven City Council, author Eric Cervini, the FIPPOA/Fire Island Pines Property Owners Association president, activists, and, of course, trailblazers. A march and reception will follow the ribbon cutting.
As an added treat, the long-running Fire Island Dance Festival is also that same weekend.
