With our new Destination of the Week feature we hope to not only provide a respite from your day with beautiful photos of far-off lands, but also offer inspiration for your next getaway. Our first DOTW is lovely Denmark, the forward-thinking nubbin sticking out of northern Europe. A nation of Vikings in the Middle Ages, Denmark is now one of the happiest places on Earth. Maybe that's related to the pride they can take in their eco-consciousness, which includes not only passing one of the world's earliest environmental protection laws but also the green commuting habits of Copenhagen residents, who overwhelmingly bike, walk, and take transit to work. Denmark also has a history of defending minorities, including Jews during the German occupation of World War II. Denmark was also the first nation in the world (!) to extend rights to same-sex couples, by legalizing registered partnerships in 1989. With the 25th anniversary of that momentous occasion, the country has many LGBT-related plans in the works, including gay tie-ins with the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen. Did we not mention that Denmark, surrounded by water on three sides, is also a picturesque paradise of bridges, fjords, and charming old-world architecture?
