Disgraced and mostly powerless Toronto mayor Rob Ford is demanding a rainbow flag, a show of support for LGB T Russians, be yanked from City Hall.
An hour after the flag went up on Friday, Ford threw a fit, placing a large Canadian flag over his window in response and then running outside to speak to reporters.
“This is about the Olympics,” Ford said. “This is about being patriotic to your country. This is not about someone’s sexual preference. No I do not agree with putting up the rainbow flag. We should put our Canadian flag up. I put my Canadian flag up in the window.”
The rainbow flag, which was approved by the proper channels, was still flying as of Saturday.
Lesbian councilwoman Kristyn Wong-Tam lashed back at the crack-smoking mayor.
“I believe Rob Ford is letting it all hang loose,” Wong-Tam said. “I think he is clearly demonstrating that he is homophobic, that he is bigoted.”
Ford cemented his antigay reputation by promising this week not to attend World Pride, which his city is hosting in June and is expected to bring millions of dollars of revenue to Toronto.
