Star Trek star George Takei was the master of ceremonies at a Tuesday groundbreaking event for the Regional Connector, a new subway line through downtown Los Angeles that will allow train riders direct access from East L.A. to the beach in Santa Monica, and from Long Beach all the way to the San Gabriel Valley.
Takei's presence wasn't an anomaly though. The social media star has long been an advocate of taking the bus and train. He served on the board of directors of the Southern California Rapid Transit District in the '70s and early '80s (he also ran for the City Council in 1973, narrowly losing). Takei helped establish the rapid-transit system in the city, supported distinctive artwork in Los Angeles's new subway stations, and was later named vice president of the American Public Transit Association. During his time with the SCRTD and the APTA, Takei attended ceremonies, shot ads, and filmed videos encouraging the use of transit. See some below:
