\What began as an event to bring together the global LGBTQ community at the turn of the millennium has evolved into the celebratory affair that we know today as World Pride. It would have been impossible to say back in 2000, when the inaugural World Pride was hosted in Rome, that less than two decades later cities from continent to continent would be making bids to bring the party to their streets.

Recently we learned that Copenhagen, Denmark was awarded as the coveted hosting city for the 2021 edition of World Pride. “Copenhagen Pride has expanded and developed in many positive ways,” the city said in an official release. “We maintain a strong international profile and have built strong international partnerships, and this is why we believe that we’re very suited to host WorldPride in 2021.”

World Pride is organized by InterPride, which is in charge of selecting host cities. “InterPride exists to promote Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride on an international level, to increase networking and communication among Pride Organizations and to encourage diverse communities to hold and attend Pride events and to act as a source of education,” reads their website. This year’s edition of World Pride was held in Madrid, with the next one slated to be hosted by New York City in 2019, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots.
