As a proud OutTraveler, I am always drawn back to destinations where I have felt truly safe and welcome: Charleston, S.C., stands out as one such haven.
Dubbed by fellow OutTraveler as “the most European American city,” Charleston enchants with its meticulously preserved European-style architecture, historic charm, cobblestone streets, and world-class cuisine. Beyond aesthetics, the city has long served as a beacon of Southern hospitality, embracing a vibrant and inclusive queer culture. So, it came as no surprise to me, when I learned that Charleston was named among the Top 25 LGBTQ+ travel destinations last December.
This year, the city is on the brink of an exciting transformation, elevating its luxury offerings while maintaining its storied past. As you plan your trip on ExploreCharleston.com, don’t miss on the below curated guide for the Southern gem specially tailored for our OutTravelers, showcasing the city's most indulgent and inclusive must C’s — from Culture (cultural festivities) and Community (community-driven spaces and events) to Check-in (opulent accommodations) and Cuisine (fine dining experiences)!
Music fans? Don’t miss Spoleto Festival USA this spring
For culture and music aficionados, Charleston’s premier performing arts event, Spoleto Festival USA, is a must. Founded by gay Pulitzer-winning composer Gian Carlo Menotti, the festival returns for its 49th season from May 23 through June 8, filling the historic theaters, churches, and outdoor spaces with performances spanning opera, theater, dance, and an array of musical genres, from symphonic to jazz.
Besides its artistic prestige, Spoleto Festival USA has long been a champion for diverse stories, embracing and amplifying queer voices. Most notably, RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 10 winner and international visual artist, Sasha Velour brought her acclaimed tour The Big Reveal Live show to Spoleto last year, merging avant-garde visuals and emotional storytelling in an immersive production. Additionally, since 2023, Spoleto has partnered with the Charleston-based LGBTQ+ advocacy group We are Family to produce the Tell Your Storyconcert, where personal queer narratives from musicians were turned into captivating performances.
This year’s lineup includes Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Patti Smith, the San Francisco-based Kronos Quartet, entertainer and fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi, and the eclectic jazz ensemble led by Branford Marsalis. If you prefer to have your gourmet journey curated for you, Charleston’s Food & Wine Classic is a landmark three-day event celebrating the best of Southern cuisine. Scheduled for November 14-16 this fall, the festival brings together renowned chefs — including Tyler Florence, Maneet Chauhan, and barbecue legend Rodney Scott — for tastings, demonstrations, and exclusive events. Last year’s festival was named USA Today’s No. 1 New Festival, and this year’s lineup promises an even more dynamic culinary showcase.
