A group of historians in New York recently unveiled an interactive map that includes more than 100 locations of LGBTQ significance in all five boroughs of New York. In an attempt to create awareness of the community’s history beyond just the Stonewall Inn, the NYC LGBT Historic Sites Project put rigorous research into developing this groundbreaking resource. At a recent workshop, they unveiled the map and invited New Yorkers to submit additional sites of LGBTQ significance for consideration.
Of the 100+ sites of relevance from the city’s founding until 2000, they’re separated into categories like bars, residences, medical facilities and community spaces. Some notable locations include the Andy Warhol residence at 1342 Lexington Avenue, the LGBT Community Center at 208 West 13 Street, and the Apollo Theater at 253 West 125 Street. The map can also be displayed various themes such as Lesbian Life Before Stonewall, Influential Black New Yorkers and the AIDS Crisis, so you can go on your own self-guided tour.
The map is now available online through the NYC LGBT Historic Sites Project. Watch the video, below, to learn more:
