We have another reason to worship at Lorde's altar.
Lorde might have just given Bowie fans the tribute performance they needed. At the BRIT 2016 Awards on Wednesday, Lorde sang a touching rendition of "Life on Mars" with Bowie's own backing band.
With an emotional introduction by Annie Lennox, the BRITs awarded Bowie a BRITs Icon award which was accepted by his friend, Gary Oldman. The touching sentiments continued from there as the always eloquent Brit spoke about Bowie's accomplishments, his contributions to the music industry, and his ever-present courage and dignity. Oldman added: "He was the sweetest soul ever, with the greatest cheekbones."
From the hyped Lady Gaga and Intel infused performance at the Grammys to understated concert tributes from Iggy Pop and Bruce Springsteen, the music industry has given Bowie fans tribute after tribute. But Lorde's is perhaps the greatest. With a spectacle free performance, the tribute began with a instrumental medley of Bowie's hits and finished with Lorde singing directly to Bowie:
i was so nervous in the wings, and then i whispered to myself "just sing it to david", and nothing else mattered
