?Has hell frozen over? The city that defined car culture is developing a two-wheel fetish, and it?s all because of a bicycle accident. After L.A.?s mayor was sideswiped, he called for a paradigm shift in how cars and cyclists share the road. High gas prices and ever-increasing gridlock certainly helped the cause, too. Don?t expect Portland just yet, but as Danny Roman, founder of tour company Bikes and Hikes L.A., says, "L.A. is already very biker-friendly and getting even friendlier." And not just for his gay Spin Dating rides. Last July, the city authorized the construction of 1,680 miles of bikeways.

Start in Los Feliz, a neighborhood between Hollywood and downtown L.A. It?s on the high end geographically and socioeconomically, with cozy early 20th?century homes lining the foothills of Griffith Park. As Sunset Boulevard gyrates about 2? miles via Silver Lake to Echo Park, you?ll breeze along downhills and huff up moderate ones to Sunset Junction. Detour on Fountain Avenue and Hyperion Avenue for some of L.A.?s top gay nightspots.
