Our fourth annual online Readers' Choice Awards was wildly popular. This year we had twice as many votes for the best of the best in gay travel. The following is a selection of winners. Many congratulations to all of our 2008 winners!
DESTINATION OF THE YEAR
Gold: Argentina
Argentina has its capital Buenos Aires to think for bringing the land of Tango to the winner's circle in this category. Its gay-friendly vibe and appealing cultural fusion are a testament to the continuously evolving tastes of our faithful readers.
Silver: Australia
Exotic beaches, wildlife, and easy-going Australians keep gay travelers crazy for down under. A vibrant gay scene centered around Sydney probably helps too! Check out our cover story.
Bronze: Spain
Spain has much to offer LGBT travelers, such as Madrid's gayborhood Chueca (one of the best in Europe) or the cultural Mecca that is Barcelona [link to: http://www.outtraveler.com/exclusives_detail.asp?did=767].
Runners-up: Brazil, Great Britain
INTERNATIONAL DESTINATION
Gold: Buenos Aires
Argentina's capital continues to be a destination of choice among LGBT travelers. With close to 25 gay bars and clubs, countless street cafés, and legalized same-sex civil unions, Buenos Aires feels just as much like a European conurbation as it does a Latin American one.
Silver: Barcelona
Antoni Gaudí's birthplace is our readers' runner-up destination for the second year in a row. An LGBT highlight is L'Eixample, the city's gayborhood.
Bronze: Amsterdam
Our readers love the city that sports both an anything-goes environment and the world's first monument dedicated to gays and lesbians.
DOMESTIC DESTINATION
Gold: New York City
With Gov. David Paterson's decision that New York would recognize other states' same-sex marriages, it comes as no surprise that the Big Apple lands the top spot on our survey for the fourth year in a row.
Silver: San Francisco
With increasing buzz around Gus Van Sant's upcoming movie, Milk, the City by the Bay is more popular than ever with gay travelers.
Bronze: Miami
The chic atmosphere of Ocean Drive, the happy hubbub of Lincoln Road, and South Beach's gay-friendly sands continue to sparkle.
